ran across a website tonight with similar research...

http://10000birds.com/birds-of-the-twelve-days-of-christmas.htm/comment-page-1#comment-134724

and this was my comment to it ... your research is awesome and is very close to what I discovered. I researched this earlier this year and was just brushing up on my blog making sure I had everything I needed for my family christmas program. you stopped at day 7 but I found out that it is ALL birds. or certainly could be. 10 Lord’s a leaping… there is a Lord God Bird, a woodpecker and it leaps. In fact many birds leap. 8 maids a milking. the cuckoo bird is called a maid and they milk their young. 9 ladies dancing… There is a Lady roco bird… and it could just be referring to female birds dancing. birds dance and leap. 11 pipers… there are sand pipers. 12 drummers drumming… many birds drum… in fact the ruffled grouse (PA) is called a partridge or drummer. thought you might like to know. no proof of if that is what the author of the song intended but hey, it works.

working on my Christmas decorations even as I type this. Yes it is that time of year and I am hurrying and scurrying cause the season will come and go before we know it. Happy Birthday Jesus, I sure do love You!!
I posted this on my facebook this morning.
Holidays are holy days so when you say Happy Holiday's you still can't get rid of the HOLY ONE. I personally say Merry Christmas as I prefer doing everything in word and in deed in the NAME of the Lord. Jesus is the reason for the season!! Our Savior, Our Messiah. If ever the world needed Hope it is now. Spread the word... HOPE came down at the very first Christmas. you can keep your Santa and Scrooge and all of that, but I want His Presence this Christmas.

been thinking how close it is getting to Christmas. thinking that Mark better be getting his sermon together about the importance of Birds in the Bible. like the Eagle, the Dove, the sparrow, the raven, etc. I think it will be real interesting and I am looking forward to it. Mom Peter (if she gets to go to Branson) can tell us about the 12 days of Christmas from the Biblical standpoint during the "dark ages". I am thinking we could sing "His eye is on the Sparrow", " Consider the Lilies", "I'll Fly Away" and "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as Eagles... etc.

Soaring like an eagle....

this bird was soaring above the highway as we were coming home from church Sunday. mark doesn't think it is an eagle, but it sure was soaring like one. - Amazing!!

Sunday, March 27, 2011

today I saw a sparrow trying to soar as an eagle and I got this message/thought.

I don't care if you are soaring like an Eagle or just as a Sparrow... He still is Lord and is watching out for you. The main thing is to just Fly!! Let his love and strength carry you!..

Birds

I bought a pair of birds at Sol's in Wilmont Ohio. I thought they were wood and allowed Israel to play with them as we walked around the store, thinking if his hands were occupied then we would have less "no no's". he banged the birds together and was quite happy. It wasn't until he dropped one and it broke that I realized they were pottery. I bought them anyway as I can easily glue it. well I would have had to buy them for sure anyway after he broke it, but what I mean is, it doesn't matter to me that they broke, it was a clean break and I will glue it good as new.

I am amazed at how there are birds in stores everywhere. Saw some I wanted and didn't buy at Cracker Barrel, and at the Amish Door. I know I can make a bunch of my own and really need to dive in and do that.

Speaking of live birds, we have some wanting to build a nest on our front porch. Also, I saw an Eagle while driving down Main Street here in Henderson one day last week and then there was an article the following day in the Independent about how Eagles are making a home here in Chester County. Neat, maybe some will find a home in some of the taller trees in our backyard.

research/notes for 12 birds of Christmas...

The twelve days of Christmas

Photos are not lining up like they should. I am working on fixing this.

On the (first) day of Christmas my true love sent to me
A partridge in a pear tree
(also called gray pheasant)
Repeat adding one of these lines each time

Two turtle doves

Three french hens = turkey

Four colly birds (sometimes called calling birds or collie birds)

Five gold rings Red golden ring neck pheasant

Six geese a-laying

Seven swans a-swimming

Eight maids a-milking Cuckoo’s maid

Nine ladies dancing Lady Ross Tyraco bird

Ten lords a-leaping (Lord God bird, also called ivory billed woodpecker)

Eleven pipers piping Sand piper

Twelve drummers drumming Drummer (north).

(the ruffled grouse State bird of PA is also called a partridge or drummer)

ending with
On the twelfth day of Christmas my true love sent to me
Twelve drummers drumming
Eleven pipers piping
Ten lords a-leaping
Nine ladies dancing
Eight maids a-milking (

Seven swans a-swimming
Six geese a-laying
Five gold rings
Four colly birds
Three french hens
Two turtle doves
and A partridge in a pear tree

as the wryneck get its names of cuckoo's mate marrow maiden etc not from any fondness for the cuckoo's society but because it arrives and departs about the same time as that bird Its Swedish name is Goktita Mr Broderip in his Zoological Recreations p 75 says that in Herefordshire the red backed shrike Lanius collurio is called cuckoo's maid probably because it has been seen feeding a young cuckoo

All pigeons and doves feed their young crop milk.

………………….
I was thinking about doing a research on the 12 days of Christmas from a floral point of view. I know that there is a dwarf tree called the partridge in a pear tree… and a flower called maids a milking The California native flower commonly called Milkmaids is named for its resemblance to the hat often worn by milkmaids).

(kind of like a lily of the valley or something)…

< Cuckoo Flower - Cardamine pratensis Family - Brassicaceae. Also known as - Lady's Smock, Milking Maids, Pig's Eyes, Cuckoo Bread, Lucy Locket>
but the rest I am not certain about. I did enjoy doing the bird research and found a couple of videos even that had Lords a leaping (birds and ducks) and ladies dancing (birds).

I also love the Geico commercial about a bird in hand being worth two in a bush.

The 12 days of Christmas is for the Birds:::

I choose a theme for our family Christmas every year... well this year 2011, I have chosen "the twelve days of Christmas" and I want our family to spend all or at least some of it in Branson MO, to celebrate my husband (Rev. T. Mark Peter)'s 50th b-day on December 20. I thought I would start researching the poem/song of the 12 days of Christmas and thought it interesting that so many of the days included birds. And so I got to thinking, well maybe ALL the gifts were birds originally. I did discover that indeed the 5 golden rings were birds, Golden ringneck Pheasants. So this sent me on a further search and though I couldn't find any more research that proved my theory - I did find that there ARE birds that could fit all of the other gifts as well. Instead of giving all my information here on this first blog, I will spread it out throughout the year.
I will take one bird per month, making the 12 days of Christmas, really the 12 months of Christmas... Making it a year long blog. I hope that you will enjoy it.
~Lisa Peter

I saw this picture of a bird posted on facebook last night. Not one of the birds of Christmas, but I might include other birds too throughout the blogging.
